IRISDANCEWEAR
SLOW-DANCEWEAR FOR A MORE CONSCIOUS LIVING
IRIS MIR & IRISdancewear
IRISdancewear is the result of a series of unexpected events that have enriched my life in the past few years. Born and raised in Barcelona, my Mediterranean roots have shifted as they have been beautifully blended and influenced by the Chinese culture I was able to experience throughout the years I lived and worked in Hong Kong and Beijing.
Dance officially made it to my life in 2014 when I decided to fulfill my passion to learn ballet as an adult. I was living in Beijing at the time and my first encounter with ballet came from a devoted Japanese teacher who set up a lovely ballet studio in Beijing. I learnt Ballet in Chinese with students from China, Hong Kong, Korea and Japan. When I moved to Hong Kong, I was attending classes only at local ballet schools. Chinese has been always the language that I relate to Ballet until I moved to London.
Dance fascinates me for one simple reason: every dance piece, every dance move, opens the door to a new story, a unique and volatile world that only exists in the moment: when the dancer moves from within. This is one of the purest forms of communication. It embodies the development of societies and cultures. Movement also represents history and it’s a one-of-a-kind window to different cultures and world views communicated in a universal language.
HOW IRISdancewear CAME TO BE
I created IRISdancewear as a platform to share my passion for dance and movement with different communities; and to contribute to draw audiences closer to this powerful art form in a way that reminds us of the importance of being true to our identity and embrace diversity as our most powerful resource as human beings.
IRISdancewear designs embrace the uniqueness and diversity of dance as one of the most captivating and fascinating art forms with personalized and handmade garments and accessories.
I only use fabric remnants or small amounts of fabric that I personally source when I travel across Asia and Europe. By using dance as a source of inspiration, I give these raw materials a second life by approaching each design depending on the fabrics and ribbons that I had found.
All the designs come in very limited editions, because I only use fabric remnants or just a few yards from random fabrics that most of the times I wouldn’t be able to order again.
That’s specially the case of my innovative concept of customized dance skirts. They are made to order according to the shopper’s ribbon and fabric of choice to empower self-expression.
IRISdancewear also carries a one-of-a-kind collection of balletwear for daughters (and mothers) to encourage individuality as a value that should be nurtured since we are kids. And to foster societies to pass the value of individuality onto today’s children to make sure generations to come embrace diversity in life and in dance. Most of the kids collection items can also be made-to-order in adult sizes, if mothers or sisters want to match their ballet skirts.
Professional dancers from the English National Ballet, the Royal Danish Ballet, the Dance Theatre of San Francisco and the Hong Kong Ballet have been wearing IRISdancewear designs.
