Tutored by Serene Debs and Iris Mir, co-creators of Medi.
Join us from across continents to create unapologetic and hopeful poetic visions about the Mediterranean. This workshop will blur the lines between words and matter, taking us on a journey to the edges of possibility to create new visions for the Mediterranean region.
The session will start with a more self-reflective practice where we will use the word UNTIL حتى (HATA) as a trigger to question our response ability to mainstream narratives of the Mediterranean in the midst of migration crises, wars and armed conflicts that take over the news and mainstream narratives about a region that was once known and cherished for their kindness, solidarity and cultural diversity. The second part of the workshop will take participants on a sensory journey of abstract exploration where UNTIL حتى will become a gesture of self-expression through art.
A territory encompassing 22 nations and three continents, the Mediterranean is a hub of ancient traditions, cultures, travel routes and the place where Eastern and Western Philosophies and ways of being met around a sea that is shared by all surrounding cultures and communities. Our experimentation with the concept of UNTIL حتى will lead us to a disruptive collective experiment to unearth the unheard of and the unsaid about the hopeful futures and interdependent networks of care and inquiry preserved in the Mediterranean.

DURING THE WORKSHOP:
We’ll spend an afternoon together re-imagining our relationship with the Mediterranean while nurturing our wellbeing creating new pathways for a more hopeful future where care and diversity take on a central stage in our communities.
The first part of the workshop will consist of a guided process of self-reflection where we will be thinking about the Mediterranean in a more conceptual way. We will play with words to awaken our conscious and unconscious understanding of the Mediterranean. We’ll use a pen and a blank piece of paper to take notes.
During the second part of the workshop, we will completely change the medium to transform those words and concepts into a more abstract form of expression. Exploring the diversity of the Mediterranean through color. We’ll use color pencils and blank paper.
We’ll intimately gather for 2 hours in a small live group over Zoom to give people the opportunity to join from anywhere in the world. The main language of this online retreat will be English. Some support will be offered in Arabic and Spanish, in case it is needed for clarifications. You can use any language of your choice for your creations during the workshop.

WHAT’S MEDI
Medi takes the shape of guided collaborative artistic and creative workshops that aim to create a language of possibility to come up with counter stories, remember collective histories, explore shared pathways and imagine speculative futures that reinforce the role of the Mediterranean as a place for life.
With this effort, Serene Debs and Iris Mir are joining their creative forces and experiences to hold regular online workshops and one-of-a-kind in person pop-ups around the world to bring together people from across continents to use their imagination, artistic instincts, languages and cultural identities to reflect on the diversity of the Mediterranean and the region’s collective histories.
